Madrid faces a sweltering weekend with up to 39 degrees
Madrid will begin summer with a sweltering weekend. Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June will bring very high temperatures, warm nights and weather warnings that make it necessary to organise any outdoor plan better.
Saturday will already be a tough day. The forecast points to highs of around 37 degrees in the capital, with a yellow heat warning in the Metropolitana y Henares area from midday into the afternoon. Skies will be mostly clear and the sun will dominate much of the day.
Friday night into Saturday also brings some instability. AEMET maintains a yellow storm warning in the metropolitan area, with the possibility of very strong wind gusts and hail until the early hours. Afterwards, the heat will once again take centre stage.
Sunday will be the most difficult day of the weekend. Highs could reach 39 degrees in Madrid, with an orange warning for extreme temperatures between 13:00 and 21:00. It will be a day to avoid exertion during the middle hours and seek shade, water and cool spaces.
The lows will not offer much relief either. The capital will range between 22 and 24 degrees in the early hours, values that may make rest difficult in poorly ventilated homes or in neighbourhoods where asphalt retains more heat overnight.
No significant rain is expected during the central part of the weekend, beyond the possible initial instability. The weather will be stable and very hot, with a dry atmosphere and a full-summer feel from early on.
The recommendation is to bring walks, sport and shopping forward to early morning, avoid direct sun between midday and mid-afternoon, drink water frequently and pay attention to children, older people, people with chronic illnesses and pets.
This weekend Madrid will continue to offer plans, terraces and outdoor activities, but the heat will set the pace. The key will be to choose timings carefully: early morning or late in the day for being outdoors, and shelter indoors during the hottest hours of the day.
