Madrid makes money from green transport: EMT energy savings go to market
Energy savings on buses and BiciMad have stopped being an internal indicator and become a real source of income for Madrid.
The city is turning energy savings into an economic resource: the Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) will monetise the energy saved thanks to electric buses, the renewal of Bicimad and more efficient management of its depots.
Until 2030, EMT will be able to sell verified volumes of energy savings and the corresponding certificates under an agreement with Iberdrola. This concerns not only the solutions already implemented, but also future measures adopted as part of the process of modernising transport and its infrastructure.
The mechanism is simple: energy that is not consumed is given an economic value and marketed, generating additional revenue for the city. These funds will help it continue moving towards emissions-free transport, expand the electric fleet and strengthen Bicimad, showing that sustainability can also translate into economic benefits for the city.
