Madrid stays out on the streets despite the smoke cloud and warnings

From Alonso Martínez to Gran Vía, the scene was that of an almost normal summer afternoon. The smell of smoke, the grey sky and ash in some places were not enough to empty the city centre, where many passers-by said they were unaware of the health recommendations.

The authorities had asked people to close doors and windows, reduce outdoor exercise and wear a mask in the event of prolonged exposure. The warning was particularly important for older people, children and people with respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses.

The stations at Méndez Álvaro, Moratalaz, Ensanche de Vallecas and Plaza de España recorded some of the worst figures during the morning. PM2.5 and PM10 particles were concentrated mainly over the centre and the south, the areas most affected by the movement of the smoke.

In Santa Bárbara square, the terraces remained full and traffic barely changed. Some workers did notice a heavier atmosphere, with visible smoke along certain stretches and small ash particles that even settled on cars and windows.

The situation was also noticeable in neighbourhoods such as San Fermín and in municipalities in the metropolitan south and west. There, the smell of burnt wood was more intense, although most residents kept up their journeys and everyday plans.

The health authorities insisted on limiting exposure and following the instructions of the emergency services. The response, however, was uneven: while some people chose to stay at home or wear a mask, others continued walking around with barely any changes.

The scene leaves an active city under an unusual sky, with full terraces and a layer of smoke suspended over the avenues. The air made extra caution necessary, but it did not manage to stop Madrid’s pulse entirely.
