Madrid promotes thousands of cheaper flats: how access to housing will change over the coming years
Madrid is activating a measure that could change access to housing over the coming years. The Community is mobilising 500 million euros in guarantees to support up to 10,000 protected homes, aiming to increase supply and ease price pressure in the rental and purchase markets.
The plan, in collaboration with Avalmadrid, allows developers and cooperatives to access better financing conditions. This makes it easier for new projects to move forward at a time when construction is becoming increasingly difficult.
The impact will be felt especially in developing areas. The first operation has already begun in Los Ahijones, with nearly 300 protected rental homes. These types of neighbourhoods, still growing, are emerging as key to absorbing demand that cannot find space in the centre.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase the stock of affordable housing. The regional plan foresees tens of thousands of new homes in the coming years, in response to an increasingly strained market.
