Madrid promotes the extension of Metro Line 1 northwards

The Community of Madrid has taken the first step towards extending Metro Line 1 to Madrid Nuevo Norte. The last Council of Government meeting of the year approved the tender for the project to build new depots, with an initial investment of 803,789 euros. These facilities, of around 15,000 square metres above ground and 26,000 underground, will make it possible to store and maintain the trains that will run on the future extension.

The extension of Line 1 will start from Chamartín, connecting with lines L1 and L10, and will add three new stations: Centro de Negocios, Fuencarral Sur and Fuencarral Norte. According to regional government forecasts, the extension will benefit more than 175,000 future residents of the area.

Metro de Madrid currently has 14 depots strategically distributed across the region, occupying a total of 1.4 million square metres. The new depots will strengthen this network to serve urban growth.

In its official statement, the Community of Madrid recalls that this count no longer includes the historic Cuatro Caminos depots, designed by Antonio Palacios and demolished to make way for a property development with 443 homes. The City Council and the Community continue to defend this project in the courts despite neighbourhood opposition.

The extension of Line 1 and the construction of new depots mark a milestone in the transformation of Madrid’s public transport, preparing the city for the future growth of Madrid Nuevo Norte.
