Madrid promotes Metro Line 9: new station and connection with emerging neighbourhoods

The Community of Madrid has taken a decisive step to extend Metro Line 9, which will have a new station in operation in 2029. The Governing Council has relaunched, for the third time, the tender for the contract to draw up the project, after two previous unsuccessful attempts.

The future station will be located between Puerta de Arganda and Rivas Urbanizaciones, facilitating access to the new urban developments in Madrid’s south-east, such as Los Ahijones and Berrocales. This extension responds to the anticipated growth in the area, where up to 300,000 people are estimated to be able to live once all the developments, including Los Cerros, El Cañaveral and Valdecarros, are completed.

The project, which will have a 14-month implementation period and a budget of €825,800, incorporates new European safety requirements from the design stage. This budget increase, compared with the initial €328,600, is due to the integration of EU regulations.

In addition, the new neighbourhoods will be connected by a 16-kilometre boulevard along which Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will run, linking at three points with Madrid’s public-transport network and improving mobility in Ensanche de Vallecas and the surrounding area.

In parallel, the reopening of Metro Line 7B in Coslada and San Fernando de Henares, after more than 1,200 days of partial closure for works, has not brought the expected relief to residents. Many report that structural problems in their homes caused by the rail line persist, and call for solutions that have still not arrived.
