Madrid launches Cineu: a free event featuring the best European cinema
From 2 October to 28 November 2025, the capital hosts Cineu, the first European Film Showcase, allowing people to enjoy 22 independent films free of charge at four cultural centres in the city.
The series will bring together titles endorsed by prestigious international festivals — Cannes, Venice, Berlin and San Sebastián — and is conceived as a meeting point between cinema and social reflection. All sessions will have free admission until capacity is reached and will take place in the afternoon at the cultural centres of Valdebernardo and El Madroño (Vicálvaro), La Vaguada (Fuencarral–El Pardo) and Emilia Pardo Bazán (Centro).
Among the films scheduled are Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves and Mati Diop’s Dahomey, alongside works by young filmmakers offering new perspectives on European reality. There will be public discussions after every screening.
The festival is organised into four thematic blocks: Europe’s social and cultural changes in Transformation; the historical review in Shared Memories; links with other continents in Oceanic Bridges; and the anniversary of Spain and Europe: 40 Years of a Shared Journey.
The first session will take place on Thursday 2 October at 18:00 at Centro Cultural Valdebernardo, and the programme will continue until the end of November with titles that seek to bring auteur cinema to a wider public and strengthen cultural dialogue in Madrid.
