Madrid invests €56 million in Metro cleaning and full disinfection

The Community of Madrid has approved an investment of 56 million euros for cleaning and disinfecting the entire Metro network over the next four years. The newly awarded contract covers both trains and workspaces and key areas of Madrid's underground system.

The agreement, which may be extended, is divided into four lots to cover the entire network. The first includes lines 1, 2 and 3, together with the Ópera–Príncipe Pío branch line. The second lot focuses on lines 4, 5 and 7, as well as infrastructure maintenance vehicles. The third covers lines 6 and 9 and the historic trains at Chamartín station. The fourth lot groups together lines 8, 10, 11 and 12.

The contract provides for regular cleaning of both the interior and exterior of trains and the rest of the rolling stock. It also includes the sanitation of work equipment and spaces such as depots, storage facilities and shunting yards. At these facilities, disinfection, insect control and rodent control work will be carried out periodically, along with graffiti removal and the replacement of anti-vandalism films.

The Community of Madrid has stressed that occupational safety and health, respect for the environment and proper waste management will be priorities in the provision of these services. In addition, current employees will be transferred to the new contractor, guaranteeing continuity of employment. Metro de Madrid insists that maintaining rolling stock is key to providing a safe, reliable and quality service in a clean environment for users.
