Madrid multiplies its dog areas and moves towards a more dog-friendly city
Madrid City Council expects to reach a total of 237 dog areas across its 21 districts in 2027. These spaces are designed so that dogs can run, play and socialise in safe, comfortable and accessible settings.
Madrid is strengthening its commitment to animal welfare and community coexistence with an ambitious plan to create and improve dog areas. There are currently just over 100 designated zones, but the municipal forecast is to reach 237 by 2027, ensuring that every neighbourhood has suitable spaces where dogs can exercise and socialise safely.
The investment allocated to these facilities exceeds 2.6 million euros and includes both new areas and the renovation of existing parks. Examples of future refurbishments can be found in Montecarmelo, Hortaleza, Latina, and Carabanchel. Since 2023, 18 new zones have been opened, adding to the 80 launched in the previous term.
Each area features secure fencing, adapted water fountains, bins and bag dispensers, as well as play equipment and shaded areas with benches for companions. These amenities make the dog spaces meeting points that not only benefit the animals but also promote social and neighbourhood integration.
The strategy is part of a broader vision that establishes Madrid as a dog-friendly city: allowing pets on public transport, promoting responsible adoption, and awareness campaigns such as “Haz tu magia”, aimed at keeping shared spaces clean.
With this expanding network, Madrid takes another step towards an inclusive and sustainable urban model, where pets are an active part of everyday city life.
