Madrid asks residents to be ready for evacuations due to heavy rain

Autumn storms are no longer just a topic of conversation in Madrid. Now, the Comunidad de Madrid warns that any resident may be forced to leave their home if the rain gets heavy. The message is clear: be ready for a quick evacuation, with essentials close at hand.
The Agencia de Seguridad y Emergencias Madrid 112 has sent a letter to the 179 town councils in the region. In it, they stress the importance of having local emergency plans and thoroughly checking the most vulnerable infrastructure. Drains, gullies, and sewers must be clean and ready to handle episodes of heavy rain. Areas near rivers, streams, and dry riverbeds are considered especially sensitive: camping or parking vehicles there is prohibited to avoid unnecessary risks.
Prevention is also key at home. It is recommended to check roofs, pipes, and drains, and to remove anything that could block the flow of water. For those living in detached houses, having a small pump can make a difference if water starts to rise.
If the rain intensifies, the Comunidad de Madrid advises protecting entrance doors, disconnecting electricity, and avoiding staying on ground floors. Shelter should be sought in higher areas, always with a charged phone, some food, warm clothing, and, above all, calm.
The recommended emergency kit includes documents, medication, a torch, food, water, and a battery-powered radio. This is not a whim: if you have to leave home quickly, these items can be vital. In addition, it is stressed to avoid ravines and riverbeds, not to cross flooded areas, and to use the car only if absolutely necessary.
In a real emergency, 112 remains the point of reference, but people are asked not to overload the lines with minor queries. After the storm, it is time to check for damage, ensure supplies are working, and put affected belongings out on the street without blocking the way.
The Comunidad de Madrid can activate the ES-Alert mass messaging system if the situation requires it, as happened in September 2023 during the DANA. Meanwhile, Canal de Isabel II is stepping up monitoring and cleaning of the urban drainage network, focusing on the city’s most problematic spots.
