Madrid launches the ‘science neighbourhood’ in Chamartín
The ‘science neighbourhood’ project is being launched in Madrid’s Chamartín district; it will bring together universities, museums and urban spaces in a single public programme.
The city will integrate the area bounded by López de Hoyos, Paseo de la Castellana, María de Molina and Joaquín Costa into an open cultural territory where science will form part of everyday life.
The project includes the neighbourhoods of El Viso, Prosperidad and Nueva España. Workshops, visits to scientific institutions, documentary screenings and themed gatherings are planned. At the presentation on 18 February, Pilar Careaga, the first woman to obtain an industrial engineering degree at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales, will be remembered.
The project is being developed with the participation of Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales, Residencia de Estudiantes and Instituto Ramiro de Maeztu. The initiative has the support of mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
The city will prepare maps and routes, install plaques with quotations from scientists and continue improving streets. Part of the funds will be used to reinforce safety around schools, refurbish parks and sports facilities, and complete the refurbishment of El Viso. There, a more accessible pedestrian space is being created, the trees are being preserved and supply networks are being put underground.
