Madrid launches vaccination of babies against bronchiolitis
From this Monday, families can request an appointment to immunise their children against respiratory syncytial virus, responsible for most bronchiolitis in infants. The campaign expects to reach around 50,000 children in the region.
The Community of Madrid has opened the vaccination schedule against RSV, a virus that causes thousands of cases of bronchiolitis in babies every year. The measure is aimed at children under six months old and begins with an appointment system available at nine public hospitals, including La Paz, 12 de Octubre, Niño Jesús and Gregorio Marañón.
The plan distinguishes between two groups of children: those born between April and September 2025 will receive the dose throughout October, while newborns between October and March will be protected directly in maternity wards before leaving hospital. This strategy is intended to cover the entire period during which the virus circulates, which usually intensifies in autumn and winter. To ensure that the information reaches all families, the Health Department has prepared SMS reminders and informational material in several languages. According to official data, in the previous campaign vaccination prevented most hospital admissions for bronchiolitis, supporting its effectiveness and safety.
With this new edition, Madrid reinforces its commitment to the health of its youngest residents and gets ahead of the season with the highest incidence of respiratory syncytial virus.
