Madrid reopens the Plaza Mayor tunnel after weeks of reinforcement works
The tunnel running beneath Plaza Mayor returned to service on Friday 29 August, restoring one of the busiest connections in Madrid’s historic centre for drivers. It reopened earlier than expected, as the closure had been scheduled until early September.
Over the summer, this almost 600-metre underpass underwent a comprehensive refurbishment. The work included repairing the slab, treating metal beams and improving waterproofing. At the same time, the paving, walls and signage were renewed, and the square’s cobblestones were relaid after a protective treatment was applied to ensure their long-term preservation.
With an investment of close to 800,000 euros, the project sought not only to strengthen the safety of vehicles passing through it, but also that of users of the car park located beneath the emblematic square. The news brings some relief to mobility in the centre of the capital, just as traffic begins to intensify after the summer holidays. It also coincides with the early reopening of access to the Avenida de Portugal and M-30 tunnels, closed because of the A-5 undergrounding works.
