Madrid strengthens support for people with intellectual disabilities with 162 million euros

The Comunidad de Madrid has given the green light to a historic investment of 162 million euros to strengthen residential care and occupational centres for people with intellectual disabilities. The new framework agreement, approved by the Consejo de Gobierno, guarantees the maintenance of 1,050 public places over the next four years, representing an increase of 35.6% compared with the previous agreement.

Among the main new features, the number of weekly hours of social intervention is doubled, from 10 to 20, and the compulsory use of technological devices and digital applications is introduced. These tools will facilitate communication with families and optimise the management of users’ personal belongings.

The agreement also includes new professional profiles, such as nutritionists and speech therapists, and extends users’ adaptation period from 60 to 90 days, with the aim of improving their well-being. Public residential places are distributed between centres in Madrid city — in districts such as Moratalaz, Fuencarral-El Pardo, Hortaleza, Barajas, Retiro, Chamartín, Ciudad Lineal, San Blas-Canillejas, Tetuán, Moncloa-Aravaca and Latina — and municipalities such as Pozuelo de Alarcón, Leganés, Getafe, Alcalá de Henares, Las Rozas de Madrid, Ajalvir, Colmenar Viejo, Villanueva de la Cañada, Majadahonda and Villaviciosa de Odón.

These centres offer accommodation, meals, care and personal assistance, as well as physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychological and social support services. The main aim is to prevent functional deterioration and promote the integration, well-being and quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities served by Madrid’s public network.
