Madrid changes park maintenance: more gardeners, AI and daily cleaning
Madrid is preparing a quiet transformation that will be felt in parks, streets and green areas across the city. Madrid City Council has approved a new maintenance contract that commits to more technology, more staff and new environmental measures.
The most visible change will come in day-to-day management. The city will introduce artificial intelligence systems to better monitor the condition of gardens and trees, detect incidents, and organise maintenance work more quickly.
Investment is also increasing significantly. The annual budget exceeds 150 million euros and will allow staff numbers to grow to around 3,000 workers during seasonal campaigns, especially during periods of extreme heat or climate risk.
The contract also requires stronger measures for biodiversity and sustainability. There will be insect shelters, nesting boxes, artificial ponds, and more biological pest control, while restrictions on the use of chemical products will remain in place.
The changes will particularly affect new neighbourhoods and large green areas that are expanding. There is also an aim to speed up the response after storms, fallen trees, or risk situations linked to fires and weather events.
Madrid is thus strengthening its green strategy at a time when public space is becoming increasingly important in urban life. The quality of parks and gardens is no longer seen as just an aesthetic matter: it directly affects how people live, walk, and cope with the heat in the city.
