More than 1,000 serious faults unrepaired in social housing: Madrid fines and changes company
More than a thousand unresolved critical incidents have put the habitability of social housing in Madrid at risk. The Community has sanctioned the company responsible for maintenance and terminated its contract, in a move that directly affects thousands of vulnerable families.
For months, problems such as leaks, power cuts or broken boilers went unattended. Many of these incidents were urgent, forcing tenants to live with situations that affect their day-to-day lives in their own homes.
The administration has imposed a €355,000 fine on the contractor and activated a new emergency contract. The company now taking on the service will have to deal with more than a thousand pending work orders and resolve accumulated delays across different housing developments.
The economic impact is also significant. The failure to install urgent boilers alone has generated a substantial cost, in addition to other basic repairs that were not carried out on time.
The Social Housing Agency manages around 25,000 homes in the region, many intended for people in vulnerable situations. This episode highlights the difficulties of maintaining an agile service across such a large housing stock.
For residents, the change is not merely administrative. It translates into the possibility of recovering basic conditions in their homes, from having hot water to avoiding electrical or gas risks, something essential for safety and daily life.
