Madrid champions its neighbourhoods: a new tourist route to get lost beyond the centre

Madrid has grown tired of every selfie being taken in Sol. With more than 11 million visitors in 2024 and the low season officially extinct, the City Council has launched a new strategy: decentralise tourism and show that the capital has much more to offer than the same three neighbourhoods as always.

Under the slogan “You’re missing streets”, 31 areas with their own charm will be promoted, starting with Carabanchel, El Capricho and Casa de Campo. The idea is simple: every neighbourhood is a destination waiting to be discovered, and the plan is to do so through well-organised campaigns, activities and routes. In total, there will be two promotional phases, with a broader tourist map than ever before. In addition, new tourist bus routes are arriving, with names such as Historic Madrid, Modern Madrid Bernabéu and Modern Madrid Ventas, replacing the classic and congested former lines. The buses, of course, will all be ECO or ZERO-emission, and the days of going about it haphazardly are over: companies will have to report how many passengers they carry, at what time and by which route. And for those who prefer to get around on foot, the city is expanding its “Anda Madrid” programme, adding six new routes to the six already in place so that you can visit more than 40 key locations without needing to use Google Maps. So now you know: the next time you come to Madrid (or if you live here), get a little more lost than usual. Because yes, Cibeles is beautiful... but have you discovered the magic of Usera or the calm of El Pardo yet?
