June fills Madrid with books, concerts, photography and major events
June arrives in Madrid with an agenda that is hard to sum up in a single plan. The city strings together books, concerts, exhibitions, festivals and major events that will change the rhythm of very different neighbourhoods, from El Retiro to the Metropolitano, via Cibeles, Matadero, Conde Duque and Ciudad Universitaria.
The Madrid Book Fair will remain one of the month’s great draws. Its 85th edition is held on the Paseo de Coches in El Retiro until 14 June, with hundreds of stalls, signings, activities and humour as the central theme. For many people in Madrid, it is not only a fair: it is a way to begin summer by strolling among books, queues and recognisable authors.
Music will have another major name: Bad Bunny. The Puerto Rican artist is concentrating ten concerts at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano between 30 May and 15 June, with tens of thousands of attendees each night and a direct impact on transport, hotels, bars and restaurants in San Blas-Canillejas. Madrid will not only host concerts; it will experience a musical residency capable of moving half the city.
The other major event will be the visit of Pope Leo XIV, from 6 to 9 June. The vigil in Plaza de Lima, the mass in Cibeles and the events at the Bernabéu will require strengthening transport, closing streets and adapting mobility at several key points. During those days, the cultural and religious agenda will blend with a city attentive to closures, checks and alternative routes.
Art will also take up a great deal of space. PHotoESPAÑA 2026 is spreading its programme across museums and cultural centres with proposals such as Endometriosis. The Silenced Pain 1860-2026, by Laia Abril, at the Museo del Romanticismo, or LUX & UMBRA, by Viviane Sassen, at the Fernán Gómez. The edition looks at contemporary image from a perspective strongly marked by women’s creation and new ways of narrating the visible.
June will also bring summer plans that are beginning to take over the city. Noches del Botánico will open its season at Ciudad Universitaria with open-air concerts, while summer cinemas will begin appearing towards the end of the month in different spaces. At the same time, festivals such as FILMADRID, from 5 to 14 June, will add cinema at several venues for those looking for something less massive and more cinema-oriented.
At the end of the month, Madrid will start to change colour with the beginning of Pride 2026, scheduled from 25 June. Although the big days will arrive in July, the first activities, parties, gatherings and cultural events will begin to be felt in Chueca and elsewhere in the city. June thus functions as the prelude to one of Madrid’s most recognisable celebrations.
What makes this month different is not only the number of plans, but how they overlap. You can go to the Book Fair in the morning, come across a mobility operation for the papal visit, end up at a massive concert or enter a photography exhibition that speaks about pain, the body or memory. Madrid in June does not arrange itself into a perfect agenda. It is experienced in layers: culture, heat, crowds, full neighbourhoods and the feeling that something is always happening a few Metro stops away.
