Madrid's cultural calendar takes off with events for all tastes
Madrid heads into a weekend with an especially packed cultural calendar, featuring music, poetry, fashion, and outdoor activities spread throughout the city and its surroundings.
World Poetry Day takes centre stage with recitals and tributes in venues such as Callao, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which will open its rooms for live readings. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week returns to IFEMA with fashion shows and activities open until Sunday.
Live music will have one of its strong points at La Casa Encendida with La Radio Encendida, a marathon of concerts and DJ sessions throughout Sunday. Other highlights include Cirque du Soleil: Ovo at the Movistar Arena and the musical Los chicos del coro at Teatro La Latina.
The offering expands with free and family-friendly plans. Nave de Villaverde hosts the Madrid es Ciencia fair, while Casa de México presents the “Cielo Tejido” installation. There are also markets such as the one in Plaza de Olavide and food routes in different neighbourhoods.
Outside the centre, the Strawberry Train runs again between Madrid and Aranjuez, and El Escorial hosts days dedicated to chocolate. Sport will also take centre stage with the Movistar Madrid Half Marathon, which will run through the centre with thousands of runners.
The city changes pace when so many proposals coincide: more active neighbourhoods, crowded streets and an agenda inviting people to move from one plan to another. Weekends of this kind reinforce Madrid’s cultural character and multiply leisure options without the need to leave the city.
With so many activities under way, the challenge will be choosing. The agenda extends until Sunday and anticipates a spring in which Madrid will continue to combine culture, leisure and urban life in every corner.
