What to do in Madrid this weekend: festivals, theatre and terraces
Madrid faces an intense weekend, with festivals, concerts, openings, open-air cinema and free events across different neighbourhoods. The agenda combines major venues, squares, parks and cultural spaces, in days made for going out despite the heat and enjoying the city as evening falls.
One of the focal points will be in the south, where Mad Cool celebrates its tenth anniversary at Iberdrola Music. On Friday and Saturday, names such as Twenty One Pilots, Kings of Leon, Pixies, Halsey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Pulp, The Black Crowes and David Byrne will pass through the venue, at a festival that will once again draw thousands of people towards Villaverde.
The city also adds a much-anticipated opening for those following retail news. Rossmann is opening its first shop in Madrid, at 82 Calle Hermosilla, with more than 12,000 products and uninterrupted opening hours from 9:00 to 22:00, Monday to Sunday. A new address for drugstore, beauty and everyday shopping in the heart of the Salamanca neighbourhood.
Veranos de la Villa starts strongly and offers several free options. Condeduque hosts the exhibition Yo fui a EGB, a nostalgic journey through objects, memories and references from several generations. Music will also take to the neighbourhoods, with Whatever Jazz Band in Tetuán and the show by Fuman, the travelling musician clown, in Usera.
Parque Santander joins the programme with Veranos en el Parque. There, the Ballet Español de la Comunidad de Madrid presents Patrimonio each night, while the Portuguese company ConCorda will bring its contemporary circus on Saturday. All with free admission and in a comfortable setting for outdoor plans.
Culture will also have events in emblematic venues. Teatro Real celebrates Opera Week with an open day on Sunday morning and free broadcasts in Plaza de Isabel II. Círculo de Bellas Artes opens its Salón de Baile as a climate refuge, with areas to rest, read and escape the heat.
The weekend also moves beyond the centre. Colmenar Viejo celebrates its Summer Carnival on Saturday from 20:00, with a parade, music, entertainment and food trucks. Museo del Prado brings back El Prado de Noche on Saturday, with a free evening visit, while CentroCentro, Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Biblioteca Regional and Retiro add new exhibitions.
Sport will have its own meeting point in Colón, which will become Plaza Selección on Friday at 21:00 to watch the Spain-Belgium World Cup quarter-final on a giant screen. Madrid Río will add two more screens, offering alternatives for those who want to experience the match in an open setting without staying at home.
The programme leaves a Madrid spread widely across the city: festivals in Villaverde, cinema and theatre in the centre, music in neighbourhoods, outdoor screens and new places to eat or shop. The weekend does not force people to choose just one plan; it invites them to move around the city according to the heat, their budget and their desire to be surrounded by people.
