Heavy storms and falling temperatures put Madrid on alert this Wednesday
The weather takes a sharp turn in Madrid and disrupts the city’s routine. AEMET has activated an orange warning for rain and storms, which entails significant risk for much of the day.
The forecast points to intense showers, with accumulations of up to 30 litres per square metre in one hour between 12:00 and 22:00. This will be accompanied by strong wind gusts and possible hail, factors that may complicate travel and outdoor plans. The temperature drop will be notable after several days of almost summer-like weather.
In view of this situation, Ayuntamiento de Madrid has activated the Plan de Actuación de Inundaciones (PAINUNAM) at level 0. This entails reinforced monitoring at sensitive points such as tunnels, underpasses or areas prone to water accumulation.
The situation will be particularly unstable and changeable. Although the orange warning focuses on the capital, other areas of the region remain at yellow level, with less intense but equally relevant rainfall. The exact location of the storms may vary within a matter of hours.
Municipal services —Policía, Bomberos y Samur— are on pre-alert to act if necessary. The main risk is not so much the total amount of rain as its intensity over short periods, which can saturate urban drainage and cause pools of water on streets and roads.
Madrid’s spring once again shows its most unpredictable side. Episodes like this force the city to adapt quickly, adjusting its pace to weather that can change within hours and directly affect daily life.
