Madrid changes pace this Sunday with 47,000 runners
Madrid is preparing for a day that will completely change its usual pace. The Zurich Rock ’n’ Roll Running Series Madrid will bring together more than 47,000 runners in the centre, requiring traffic, transport and plans to be adapted from early Sunday morning.
The event will pass through some of the city’s most emblematic points. The start will take place on Paseo de la Castellana, next to Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz, and the finish will be on Paseo de Recoletos, between Cibeles and Colón. Along the route, more than 30 music and entertainment points will turn the race into a collective experience that goes beyond sport.
The event includes three distances —10K, half marathon and marathon— with staggered starts from 8:00. Athletes in racing wheelchairs and handbikes will also take part, with their start at 8:30. The event will continue until 16:35.
The impact on mobility will be significant. Closures and diversions have already been recorded in the preceding days, but it will be on Sunday that several main roads will be restricted to traffic. For that reason, using public transport, especially the metro, is recommended for getting around the city and reaching key areas.
Beyond the competition, the race has established itself as one of Madrid’s major social events. Every year it attracts thousands of visitors and transforms the centre into a mix of sport, tourism and festive atmosphere.
If you have plans in the centre, it is advisable to check routes and leave in good time. Traffic will be limited in many areas and the metro will be the quickest option. In return, the city will offer a unique atmosphere, with streets open to runners and spectators.
