Madrid transforms Alcalá: a green boulevard will connect Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá

Madrid begins the long-awaited remodelling of Calle Alcalá between Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá in February. The project, with an investment of 6.1 million euros, will be ready in the first quarter of 2027. The intervention has the backing of UNESCO and heritage bodies.

The refurbishment seeks to restore the street’s historic layout and enhance Puerta de Alcalá, creating a central promenade almost four metres wide and a segregated cycle lane on the southern side. Car lanes will be reduced, widening the northern pavement and allowing 57 new large trees to be planted.

The design includes strips of shrubs on pavements and the central promenade, renewal of paving and asphalt, new public lighting and street furniture. In addition, spaces for terraces and outdoor tables will be reorganised.

Puerta de Alcalá will be integrated visually and functionally, with its garden remodelled following a nineteenth-century design. This will make it easier for pedestrians to connect Alcalá with the adjoining triangular area.

On Calle Alfonso XI, the western pavement will be widened and parking will be changed to parallel parking, allowing a new alignment of trees. The paving will be adapted to the style of the renewed Alcalá.

Finally, Calle Pedro Muñoz Seca will be adjusted at its entrance to adapt to Alcalá’s new layout.
