Mbappé and Vinicius singled out on a tense night at the Santiago Bernabéu

Even before the opening whistle, it was clear that this would not be just any match. Part of the crowd booed several players during the warm-up, and the discontent grew as the night went on. Mbappé became the Bernabéu’s main target: first when he came out to warm up and then when he came onto the pitch in the second half. Vinicius was also booed at several points during the match.

In contrast to the general anger, there was room for some moments of recognition. Dani Carvajal and Santi Cazorla received standing ovations from the entire stadium, on a night when the public seemed clearly to distinguish between cherished symbols and players under question.

The atmosphere reflects the wear of a particularly turbulent season for Real Madrid. The loss of LaLiga, criticism of the team’s play and Florentino Pérez’s recent public appearance announcing elections have created a strange climate around the club. At the Bernabéu, people are no longer speaking only about results: they are also speaking about identity, leadership and the direction the team should take in the coming months.
