Milla Canal: Chamberí's urban beach and new sports hub are already under way

The transformation of the Milla Canal sports complex is now unstoppable. The Community of Madrid has opened the tendering process for the long-awaited refurbishment and expansion of this space, which promises to revolutionise sporting and social life in Chamberí, Tetuán and Moncloa. The project includes a 2,500-square-metre urban beach, the modernisation of gyms and the creation of new spaces for sport and leisure.

The initial budget exceeds one million euros for the contract alone, but the total investment, spread over several phases, amounts to more than 18 million. The implementation period will be 26 months, and all the information is available on the Community of Madrid's Procurement Portal.

In 2026, work has already begun with the restoration of the southern façade of the former first reservoir and the construction of a new entrance. Changing rooms will be expanded and the accessibility of the football pitches will be improved, alongside a comprehensive refurbishment of the facilities.

This summer, the Lozoya River Fountain at Bravo Murillo, 49, reopened after its refurbishment, allowing the area to be pedestrianised on public holidays. The project also provides for the restoration of historic buildings and the construction of new rooms for physical activities, changing rooms, toilets, a café and offices.

The covered clay tennis courts will be relocated, a padel court will be added and the gyms will be refurbished. The gardens will be enlarged to host gymnastics for older people, outdoor training, table tennis and children's games. In summer, one of these areas will become a 2,500-square-metre pool beach, a true urban oasis.

The new Boix y Morer building, with a planted terrace for the café, will pay tribute to the engineers who designed the second Canal de Isabel II reservoir. It will house sports rooms, changing rooms, toilets and offices. The administration space, protected for its heritage value, will be refurbished while respecting its original character.

Accessibility is key: parking for people with reduced mobility will be provided, ensuring that everyone can enjoy this renewed sporting and social lung in the heart of Madrid.
