Mireia González begins her term as mayor of Santa Coloma with the support of Parlon and Madre

Mireia González has officially launched her programme as mayor of Santa Coloma de Gramenet at a well-attended event held on 18 November at the Auditori Can Roig i Torres. Flanked by longstanding figures in socialist local government such as Núria Parlon and Manuela de Madre, González presented the strategic priorities that will shape her term in office.

The gathering brought together numerous PSC figures, including Antonio Balmón, Filo Cañete and several party secretaries. The sight of the three mayors together symbolised the end of one era and the beginning of another, on the threshold of the next 18 months, which will be crucial to consolidating González's leadership.

In her speech, the new mayor stressed that housing and education would be the central pillars of her administration's work. She highlighted that 541 homes are currently under construction in Santa Coloma, half of them public amenity housing, and warned of the impact of the surge in demand for affordable rental housing caused by residents moving out of Barcelona.

In education, González set an ambitious goal: to reduce early school leaving to zero. She highlighted the 50% increase in students taking higher-level vocational training over the past decade, an indicator she considers key to the municipality's future.

On a personal level, the mayor shared memories of her childhood and how she had experienced Santa Coloma's transformations, reinforcing her emotional connection with the city. She reaffirmed her determination to build a more cohesive city, with more opportunities and a solid programme for all its residents.
