More aid to get rid of old cars and opt for electric vehicles in Madrid
Madrid is expanding aid for people who want to get rid of their car without an environmental badge. The new financial boost aims to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles. The measure affects those who live or work in low-emission zones. The change will be felt in the city’s daily mobility.
Mobility in Madrid is taking a further step towards sustainability. The regional government has approved an investment of five million euros for people who decide to take their car without an environmental label off the road and, if they wish, choose an electric vehicle. This measure, included in the Plan Mueve Madrid, seeks to ease the impact of traffic restrictions in the centre and in neighbourhoods affected by low-emission zones.
Thirty per cent of the aid will be reserved for people who live or work in areas with greater traffic restrictions. The aim is clear: to make life easier for those who feel changes in urban mobility most keenly and speed up renewal of Madrid’s vehicle fleet.
These grants may be requested by adult individuals resident in municipalities in the region, as well as self-employed people and small businesses. The initiative forms part of the Comunidad de Madrid’s 2023–2030 Energy, Climate and Air Strategy, which supports transport that is more efficient and more respectful of the environment.
Since the programme began, more than 6,300 applications have already been received, most for scrapping vehicles without an environmental label. More than half of those choosing this route prefer to receive 1,000 euros for handing in their old car, while others choose the 2,000-euro option if they buy a new vehicle with a Zero or ECO label. Some also prefer a public-transport pass for three years or a car-sharing voucher, although these are less common.
As for the purchase of bicycles and electric vehicles, demand is concentrated almost entirely on two-wheeled bicycles, with more than 1,700 applications. The deadline for submitting applications remains open until 31 December 2026, and all information is available on the institutional websites of the Comunidad de Madrid and Plan Mueve.
