Bats under the microscope: Salut warns of rabies risk in Catalunya

Between 21 January and 29 July, there were 88 recorded animal attacks, one in four of which involved bats. In 21% of cases, there was a real risk of infection, which triggered rabies treatments. “Many people are unaware of the danger and handle them; sometimes the animal bites and escapes, and we can’t analyse it,” warns Ana Martínez, head of epidemiological control.

The health authorities stress not to try to rescue or capture them, and to always notify rural agents. They also remind people to keep an eye on children, as these animals can hide in roofs, courtyards, or even household objects.

Rabies is fatal in almost all symptomatic cases. In 2024, 63% of risk exposures in Catalunya required immunoglobulin and urgent vaccination. The recommendation is clear: in the event of a bite or scratch, wash the wound with soap and water and go immediately to a medical centre. In this race against the virus, speed saves lives.
