Barcelona extends Christmas 2025 with unique lights and Ximénez taking centre stage
Barcelona unveils an extra 16 km of Christmas lights and brings the switch-on forward. Ximénez leads the 2025 decorations with new designs and sustainable technology.
Barcelona inaugurates Christmas 2025 with the largest display of festive lights in its history. This Saturday, the Christmas lighting will be switched on a week earlier than last year and an additional 16 kilometres of illuminated streets will be added. Landmark thoroughfares such as Via Laietana, Gran Via, Plaça Catalunya, Aragó and the DHUB de Glòries will unveil new designs. The municipal budget for the lighting amounts to 3.8 million euros, 15% more than in 2024.
The contracts have been awarded to several companies, but the major player is once again the Andalusian firm Ximénez, which has secured five of the nine main lots, worth 2.8 million. The company is responsible for decorating the city’s most important arteries with designs created by Catalan studios selected together with the City Council and ADI-FAD. It is also introducing the EcoGreen Lux system, a sustainable and recyclable technology that reduces energy consumption and will be visible this year on Diagonal and Via Laietana.
The Barcelona company Imesco has won two lots for neighbourhood streets and areas under construction, worth more than 300,000 euros. Based in Barcelona and with a warehouse in Sabadell, Imesco is committed to invigorating local commerce.
The SME Nycsa, from Santa Coloma de Gramenet, has been awarded the two smallest contracts — a total of 84,000 euros — to illuminate Trinitat Vella, the Fundació Raval Km. 0 and the Ronda Sant Pere over the next three years.
The Christmas lighting is completed by extended contracts and agreements with commercial hubs, which may receive municipal funding of up to 75% for their ornaments. In total, more than a dozen specialist companies are taking part in the installation.
The lights can be seen from 22 November to 6 January. From Sunday to Thursday, they will be on from 17:30 to 1:00, while on Fridays, Saturdays and special public holidays the hours will be extended by one hour. Barcelona is thus preparing for a brighter, more sustainable Christmas open to all citizens.
