Madrid covers up to 90% of some home renovations in four districts
Madrid has opened a new call for applications to renovate buildings in some of the city’s neighbourhoods with the greatest need for improvement. The Transforma tu Barrio 2026 Plan has €2.5 million and will operate in specific areas of Fuencarral-El Pardo, Latina, Usera and Villaverde.
The investment is divided among five strands of 500,000 euros. The areas included are the Poblado Dirigido de Fuencarral-Santa Ana, Puerto Chico, the Poblado Dirigido de Orcasitas, the Meseta de Orcasitas and San Cristóbal de los Ángeles. citeturn653032view0
The grants may be used to install lifts and other accessibility solutions, preserve structures and façades, improve building insulation, reduce energy consumption or solve health and sanitation problems. In certain cases, the removal of elements containing asbestos is also envisaged.
The call is aimed mainly at communities and associations of property owners, although sole owners of residential buildings, single-family homes and holders of collective properties intended for housing may also apply. In Orcasitas, a specific strand for energy communities and shared self-consumption projects is also being introduced.
Not every building can apply for the subsidy. They must have been built before 1998 and at least 70% of their above-ground floor area must be intended for residential use. It is also compulsory to have a Building Assessment Report completed and registered with the City Council before submitting the application.
One of the most attractive points is the possibility of combining Transforma tu Barrio with other municipal grants, such as Rehabilita Madrid. For certain interventions related to energy efficiency, the combination of programmes can cover up to 90% of the cost of the works.
Applications may be submitted until 15 October 2026, both electronically and in person at the Línea Madrid Citizen Service Offices. The grants are awarded through a simplified competitive procedure and paid in advance to facilitate the start of the work.
Since 2021, this programme has allocated more than 17.2 million euros to building refurbishment and has reached almost 200 neighbourhood communities. For those living in old blocks, the effect is measured not only in new façades: it may mean finally having a lift, spending less on heating and cooling, or removing materials that have been part of the building for decades.
