Alcalá de Henares installs OCR cameras to read number plates and control access at 20 key points

Mobility in Alcalá de Henares is about to undergo a significant change. The City Council has begun installing an advanced system of cameras with OCR technology, capable of reading number plates and monitoring vehicle access at around twenty strategic points. The measure seeks to strengthen security and streamline traffic management in key areas of the city.

The investment, which exceeds 300,000 euros, will allow the cameras to operate 24 hours a day all year round. The council explains that information collected by these devices will go directly to the Local Police Control Centre, located at Glorieta de la Armada Española. There, officers will be able to view images in real time and manage alerts, as well as administer vehicle white and black lists.

The selected locations include roundabouts, squares and main access points such as Glorieta de Mejorada del Campo, Plaza José de Espronceda, the former BRIPAC roundabout, the entrance to Hospital Universitario Príncipe de Asturias and access to the University Campus, among others. The deployment covers both residential areas and areas of regular traffic, allowing more precise monitoring of movement in the city.

The system will not only make police work easier in the event of incidents, but will also contribute to a more modern city better prepared to respond to the challenges of urban mobility. Residents will notice the change in traffic management and in their sense of security in everyday life.

Alcalá de Henares has spent years investing in the modernisation of its urban infrastructure.
