Metro de Madrid improves access at Prosperidad, San Blas and Estrella
Getting around on the Metro will be a little easier in Prosperidad, San Blas and Estrella. Madrid's network is adding new escalators at these stations to improve the connection between the street, concourses and platforms, an improvement especially useful for older people, travellers with luggage, families with pushchairs or users with reduced mobility.
Prosperidad station, on line 4, has already opened two new sections of escalators connecting the public street with the concourse. With this work, the journey to the train becomes more comfortable and reduces one of those small daily obstacles that are felt keenly when public transport is used every day.
At San Blas, on line 7, work is progressing to add three new escalators. The improvement will benefit a neighbourhood where the Metro is a key part of journeys to the centre, work areas, educational centres and other points in eastern Madrid.
The third intervention will arrive at Estrella, on line 9, where installation will begin in July. The forecast is for the new escalators to be ready at the beginning of September, just before the more intense return to routine after summer, with the return to work, classes and daily journeys.
Total investment amounts to 3.5 million euros. With these additions, Metro de Madrid will reach 1,709 escalators across the network, a figure that shows the extent to which accessibility has become a central part of modernisation works.
The plan does not stop at these three stations. Since 2023, the Community of Madrid has allocated more than 228 million euros to installing 65 lifts in 17 stations, with work already visible at important hubs such as Avenida de América and Begoña.
There are also 48 more lifts under way at 13 stations, with new direct access from the street in areas such as Tetuán, Puente de Vallecas, Ciudad Lineal, Carabanchel, Campamento and Canillejas. These works are less striking than a line extension, but very important for those who need a more comfortable and accessible route.
Ventas and Santiago Bernabéu are the focus of some of the deepest remodelling. Ventas will add five lifts in 2026, while Santiago Bernabéu is undergoing a comprehensive transformation with 12 panoramic lifts and 24 escalators by 2027.
Every new escalator changes a small but very concrete part of daily life. In a city where millions of journeys depend on the Metro, going up or down with less effort is no minor detail: it means saving time, making routines easier and making the network work better for more people.
