New hostel for Camino de Santiago pilgrims right in the centro de Madrid

The new hostel, located at 1 San Nicolás Street, just a few metres from the Palacio Real and the Catedral de la Almudena, has been inaugurated by the Real e Ilustre Esclavitud de Santiago. This space has been created to provide a welcoming place for pilgrims who choose to begin their journey from Madrid, a historic route that forms part of the Camino de Santiago known as the «Camino de Madrid».

The hostel offers bunk beds, showers, a rest area, and a simple yet welcoming atmosphere, in keeping with the Camino’s tradition of hospitality. Although capacity is limited and use is reserved for those with a pilgrim’s credential, it represents a significant step forward in revitalising this less-travelled route, which is full of natural and historical charm.

This project aims not only to provide accommodation, but also to strengthen Madrid’s importance as a spiritual starting point. The Esclavitud de Santiago, based at the church of Santiago y San Juan Bautista, is responsible for managing the hostel and also for offering the pilgrim’s blessing before the journey begins.

With this initiative, Madrid joins other major European cities in promoting the Camino de Santiago from within its urban fabric, reminding locals and visitors alike that the spirit of pilgrimage can begin from kilometre zero of the capital.
