Works on the Barcelona metro will force route changes from June
Barcelona will have a complicated summer on the metro. Work planned on L1, L3, L4 and L9/L10 Nord will require sections to be closed, entrances to be shut or interchanges to be modified for several weeks, directly affecting thousands of users who travel daily around the city and metropolitan area.
The works will be concentrated in summer to take advantage of the fall in passenger numbers, but they will affect heavily used parts of the network. There will be closures on sections of line, stations where trains do not stop and closed corridors at key interchanges, so many usual journeys will need more time or an alternative route.
The most visible impact will come on the L1. Between 17 July and 28 August, the section between Florida and Plaça de Sants will be closed for the full renewal of the track between Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou. The work also includes work on the track equipment at Santa Eulàlia and has a budget of €11.5 million.
To cover that closure, TMB will run special buses with the same operating hours as the metro and frequencies adapted to each day. Connections with the L9 and L10 Sud at Torrassa, the L5 at Plaça de Sants, Ferrocarrils at Avinguda Carrilet and Rodalies at Rambla Just Oliveras will also be recommended.
The L9/L10 Nord will have another long closure. From 25 June to 30 August there will be no service between La Sagrera and Onze de Setembre, and from 31 August to 6 September the impact will extend as far as Bon Pastor. The works, with an investment of €22.6 million, will adapt La Sagrera's large shaft for the future central section of the L9.
In this case, users will be able to use bus lines H8, 34 and 126, as well as a dedicated shuttle. The impact will be significant for those connecting at La Sagrera, one of the network's most sensitive nodes because of its role in journeys between northern neighbourhoods and the rest of Barcelona.
The L4 will also have changes. Verdaguer station will remain closed from 6 July to 30 August for accessibility works at the interchange with the L5. Trains will continue to run, but will not stop there while lifts, ramps and new escalators are installed.
Another delicate point will be Catalunya. Between 6 July and 7 September, the connecting corridor between the L1 and L3 will be closed and transfers will have to be made via the street. For those who pass through this station every day, it will be advisable to check their route before leaving: this summer, travelling by metro will still be possible, but not always by the usual way.
