Formula 1 is already changing life in Valdebebas: closures, diversions and new routes
Valdebebas is beginning to experience Formula 1's real impact on daily life. Work on the future urban circuit has required several key roads in the neighbourhood to be closed from this week, changing access, traffic and public transport until 24 May.
The most important closure affects the section between the Manuel Muñoz Monasterio roundabout and the southern roundabout of the M-11. The final layer of asphalt that single-seater cars will use during the Grand Prix scheduled for September is being laid there.
Mobility is changing particularly on streets such as Vía Dublín and Ribera del Sena, where traffic will only be allowed in one direction. The exit towards the M-11 via Francisco Umbral is also closed, and access to the tunnel in the area is restricted, something that is already altering the usual routes of residents and workers.
Public transport is also adapting. Route 171 is temporarily changing its route to maintain the connection with the neighbourhood while work on the Formula One World Championship circuit progresses.
The project is now entering a highly visible phase. A few days ago the main straight was asphalted and iconic elements of the layout, such as the La Monumental bend, are beginning to take shape. Everything forms part of an urban transformation that is accelerating as September approaches.
Valdebebas is therefore adding another change to its recent growth. The arrival of Formula 1 will not only bring a major sporting event: it is already changing the mobility, landscape and daily routine of one of Madrid’s fastest-evolving neighbourhoods.
