Madrid strengthens free buses because of the new Metro closures
Summer once again brings major changes to the Metro de Madrid network. From this weekend, new closures on lines 6 and 7 will force thousands of travellers to alter their usual routes, while EMT strengthens transport with free special buses to reduce the impact of the works.
The main disruption is on Line 6, where Moncloa station will remain closed and service between Argüelles and Ciudad Universitaria will be suspended until 2 September. The works are part of the track renewal project and the line's adaptation for its future automation.
From Sunday, Line 7 service between Gregorio Marañón and Pitis will also be interrupted. The closure will last until 28 August and will make it possible to advance the modernisation of the signalling system and rail infrastructure along 20 kilometres of tunnel and 24 stations.
These works coincide with other closures already under way during the summer. Line 9B remains interrupted between Rivas Vaciamadrid and Arganda del Rey until 13 August, while Line 10 will remain closed between Plaza de Castilla and Nuevos Ministerios until 21 August because of works taking place at Cuzco and Santiago Bernabéu stations.
To make journeys easier, EMT is maintaining and expanding several free special routes. The SE6 service covers the route between Ciudad Universitaria and Argüelles, while the SE7 connects Gregorio Marañón with Pitis following a route adapted to passengers' needs.
For Line 10, the special S10 route continues to operate, alongside reinforcement of Metro Lines 1 and 9 and buses 27 and 147, which offer an alternative along the Paseo de la Castellana corridor.
Users who need to travel during August should allow more time for their journeys and check the available alternatives before leaving home. The overlap of several major works will increase demand on replacement services and on the lines that remain open.
The works form part of the Madrid Metro network modernisation plan. Although the closures require journeys to be reorganised for several weeks, the improvements seek to increase the capacity, reliability and safety of an infrastructure used daily by millions of people.
