Nou Barris athletics rises up against the neglect of Can Dragó
Discontent is growing in Nou Barris. Dozens of families and young people linked to Club d’Atletisme Nou Barris report the progressive deterioration of the Can Dragó facilities and demand urgent action from the Town Hall to save athletics in the district.
Sharing the space with CE Europa has reduced available areas and changed the usual way the track operates. The club says that what was meant to be temporary has become permanent, and that many training sessions now take place in very limited conditions.
Among the main complaints are the removal of equipment for jumping and throwing, problems with the stands, and a general deterioration of basic facilities. Parents and athletes feel that athletics has been pushed aside in favour of football within the complex.
The protest also highlights a broader concern about grassroots sport in Barcelona. Families insist that the lack of suitable facilities directly affects the children and young people who train in the neighbourhood every week.
The club is calling for the restoration of dedicated spaces for athletics, improvements to the changing rooms and gym, and a review of permanent solutions for the stands. They also demand that the investments promised years ago finally be delivered.
Can Dragó has been one of the major sports hubs in the north of Barcelona for decades. But the pressure of sharing facilities and the lack of adaptation to new needs have turned the complex into a symbol of a debate that goes beyond the neighbourhood: how to share space and resources between sports in a city that is increasingly under strain.
