Madrid will install screens in Cibeles to follow Pope Leo XIV’s visit as hundreds of thousands arrive

Central Madrid is preparing to receive hundreds of thousands of people for the visit of Pope Leo XIV. The City Council will install screens in Cibeles and nearby streets. The operation seeks to facilitate access and the experience of those attending.

Pope Leo XIV's arrival in Madrid in June will mark a before and after in the life of the city centre. The City Council has decided to install giant screens both in Plaza de Cibeles and in the adjacent streets, from Paseo del Prado to the approaches towards Gran Vía and Alcalá. The goal is clear: to allow the expected crowd to follow the Pontiff's events closely without overloading a single point.

The deputy mayor and head of Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, explained that the operation is designed to respond to the scale of the event. Although the official agenda has not yet been finalised, Leo XIV has already confirmed his presence in Cibeles through a message addressed to attendees at the 4th Resurrection Festival. Sanz said that hundreds of thousands of people are expected at different events and that the logistical challenge is considerable, but the municipal team is confident that everything will work correctly.

The City Council has analysed different scenarios with the organisers to ensure that the city receives Pope Leo XIV as it should. Installing screens seeks to spread attendance and improve the experience of people coming into the centre, minimising crowds and facilitating mobility in one of Madrid's busiest areas.

Plaza de Cibeles, the usual epicentre of celebrations and demonstrations, will once again take centre stage in an event of international scope. Its strategic location, at the intersection of major thoroughfares and near museums and landmark buildings, makes it a natural meeting point for Madrid residents and visitors.
