Park Güell will replace its paving in 2027 with more sustainable materials
Park Güell is preparing for a key transformation that will affect the whole visitor experience without changing its essence. Barcelona will completely renew the park's paving in 2027, with the aim of improving durability and sustainability without closing access to visitors.
The public company Barcelona de Serveis Municipals has already launched the tender process to choose the team responsible for designing the project and overseeing the works. Five architecture studios are competing to lead this intervention, which has an initial budget of 295,000 euros for its technical phase.
The plan envisages replacing the current paving with similar surfaces made from more resistant and environmentally friendly materials. In addition, the works will update underground facilities, create new shaded areas and improve spaces such as children’s areas and rest zones.
The construction works will be put out to tender in a second phase, planned for the first quarter of 2027. The challenge will be to intervene in one of the city’s most visited spaces without interrupting its operation or the experience of those who walk through it every day.
Designed by Antoni Gaudí, the park is one of the icons of Barcelona’s urban planning and creativity, which means every intervention must combine innovation with respect for heritage.
Although the works will not involve closures, they may lead to occasional adjustments to access points or routes within the park. In the medium term, the improvement of paving and shaded spaces will make visits more comfortable and safer, especially on days of high attendance or heat. It also reinforces the conservation of one of the spaces most used by residents and visitors, ensuring its use in better conditions in the coming years.
