PHotoESPAÑA fills Madrid with photography in a hundred exhibitions until September
Madrid becomes a major photography circuit again with the return of PHotoESPAÑA. The festival celebrates its 29th edition from 13 May to 13 September with around one hundred exhibitions spread across museums, galleries and alternative spaces throughout the city.
Under the slogan Imagine Again, the programme combines big names with emerging artists. Highlights include Robert Frank's The Americans series, which will be shown complete in Spain for the first time, alongside works by leading figures such as Richard Avedon, Colita and Isabel Muñoz.
The route extends across some of Madrid's leading cultural venues. Institutions such as the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Fundación Mapfre, Teatro Fernán Gómez and Fundación Telefónica host part of the programme, alongside museums and heritage sites that are part of the festival.
This year, Países Bajos is the guest country, and its presence shapes several of the key exhibitions. A highlight is Viviane Sassen's LUX & UMBRA exhibition at Teatro Fernán Gómez, a retrospective spanning more than three decades of work and her first major solo exhibition in Spain.
In addition to the exhibitions, the festival includes workshops, activities and the Festival OFF, with the participation of more than thirty galleries. This is joined by Circuito Abierto, which in September will make it possible to discover less usual spaces on the city's cultural map.
For four months, photography takes to the streets and becomes part of Madrid's cultural routine, with exhibitions spread across different venues.
PHotoESPAÑA thus cements its position as one of the broadest cultural events on the calendar, with offerings accessible throughout the summer.
