Piano City Madrid will fill the city with 59 free concerts
Madrid will sound with piano for three consecutive days. The fifth edition of Piano City Madrid arrives from 26 to 28 June with 59 free concerts spread across cultural centres, museums, social spaces, hotels and less usual corners of the city.
The proposal turns the piano into an excuse to explore Madrid in a different way. There will be classical music, jazz, flamenco, blues, tango, electronic music, boogie-woogie and contemporary creation, with a programme designed both for those who follow music closely and for those simply looking for a different, accessible plan.
The festival will unfold in venues already familiar on Madrid’s cultural calendar, such as CentroCentro, Condeduque, Matadero Madrid, Serrería Belga and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. They will be joined by new stages such as Cupra City Garage, Sala Hinves, Espacio Mistral, Casita Sessions and the Hotel Emperador.
The programme will begin on Friday the 26th with concerts at CentroCentro and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. The first names include Juan Sebastián Vázquez, Francisco Fierro, Mario Fierro, Lucrezia Liberati and Rita Marcotulli, in an opening that already combines local talent, an international outlook and different styles.
Saturday the 27th will be the busiest day. There will be performances at Condeduque, Serrería Belga, Sala Hinves, Goethe-Institut Madrid, Matadero and Hospital Universitario La Paz, with proposals ranging from classical repertoire to more experimental formats. Notable names include Mario Mora, Andreas Kern, Andrea Bacchetti, Sofiya Saprykina, Manon Mullener, Alessandra Ammara and Nik Bärtsch.
On Sunday the 28th, Condeduque will host the Piano Duos series, with encounters between the piano and other instruments such as the cello, double bass and Portuguese guitar. Dúo Arte, Álex Aller with Margarida Mariño, Manuel Moreno Ramírez alongside Alejandra López, and Júlio Resende with Bruno Chaveiro will take part.
This year’s edition also looks beyond the traditional concert. In an immersive video-art experience about light generated with artificial intelligence will premiere, a commitment to bringing together music, image and technology in a less conventional format.
One of the most special elements will be the Notas Mayores series, which will bring 12 morning recitals to municipal centres for older people. The festival will also reach the mother-and-child pavilion at Hospital Universitario La Paz, with concerts adapted for people who cannot travel to the usual venues.
Piano City Madrid works because it takes music out of its predictable setting. For three days, the piano will appear in cultural spaces, social centres and everyday places, reminding us that a concert does not always need a large hall or an expensive ticket: sometimes it is enough to come closer, sit down for a few minutes and let the city change its sound.
