Mossos enter secondary schools and reopen the controversy

The initiative, driven by the Departament d’Interior and the Departament d’Educació, is a response to the rise in youth incidents detected in recent months. According to consellera Núria Parlon, the officers will not wear uniforms or carry weapons and will work in coordination with school management to carry out mediation, prevention, and support tasks.

The Govern argues that this stable presence can help detect conflicts before they escalate and provide a pedagogical role within the educational environment. The measure goes a step further than the occasional interventions that the mossos already carry out in talks on cyberbullying, drugs, or digital safety.

However, the proposal has sparked a strong political response. Isaac Albert, a deputy from Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, has criticised the initiative, considering it unnecessary and potentially stigmatising for the selected centres. Comuns and the Candidatura d'Unitat Popular also reject the measure, advocating for strengthening mediators and educational resources. For its part, Junts per Catalunya questions its coherence with current security data.

The debate goes beyond the specific measure and points to a deeper issue: how to balance security and education in a diverse city like Barcelona. While the Govern is committed to prevention through police proximity, part of the educational community insists that the solution lies in more internal resources for the centres.
