For the first time in years, an otter is seen in the Manzanares River
After recent torrential rain in Madrid, an otter has been seen in the Manzanares River, an uncommon species usually hidden outside the city.
This native species, which is endangered, usually lives in rivers, streams, and reservoirs outside the capital.
The video of the animal was published by the environmental platform Jarama Vivo. In recent years, otter sightings in Madrid have been sporadic, and seeing a live specimen within the city is very rare.
The local population is gradually recovering thanks to the efforts of the Área de Medio Ambiente. Today, otters are regularly found in the Parque de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares, in the areas of Samburriel, Manzanares, Recuenco, Santillana y Chozas.
"Supporting the natural dynamics of rivers is important for the conservation of biodiversity and the health of aquatic ecosystems," Jarama Vivo emphasises.
