Heat marks a record edition with 47,000 participants in Madrid
Madrid experienced an intense day with the most crowded edition of the Zurich Rock ’n’ Roll Running Series Madrid. Around 47,000 runners filled the streets on a day marked both by the festive atmosphere and the impact of heat on participants.
The SAMUR-Protección Civil medical team attended to 244 people along the route. Among the most serious cases, a 50-year-old runner suffered heatstroke and was taken in critical condition to Hospital Clínico San Carlos. In total, 24 participants required hospital transfer due to dizziness, exhaustion, or cramps.
The operation involved more than 200 professionals and several advanced medical stations at key points such as Recoletos, Colón, and Casa de Campo. The high temperatures, above 25 degrees, increased the physical demands of a race that already pushes runners to their limits.
The event once again confirmed its international scope. More than 10,000 participants arrived from over 110 countries, reinforcing Madrid's position as a key destination on the global running calendar.
The rise of running is turning Madrid into a global sporting stage, but it also presents challenges in terms of safety and health. Events of this scale require adapting services, mobility, and medical assistance to meet the needs of a city moving to the rhythm of sport.
