Sant Cugat reopens its central library after months of closure and refurbishment
Biblioteca Central Gabriel Ferrater reopens after being closed for almost five months due to a collapse. The cultural space reopens with safety improvements and an intensive internal reorganisation.
The Biblioteca Central Gabriel Ferrater in Sant Cugat will officially reopen on 29 November, after remaining closed since 27 June because of a section of ceiling falling down, which forced its immediate closure. During this period, the building has undergone thorough waterproofing work, roof reinforcement and safety improvements at several points inside.
The Town Council has treated this intervention as a priority within its strategy to ensure the maintenance of the municipality’s cultural facilities. In addition, this work forms part of a broader project that envisages, in the future, the creation of a new Central Library.
The technical team is currently working against the clock to put nearly 150 boxes of documentary holdings back on the building’s shelves, a task that has taken two weeks. Until this process is complete, the library remains closed to the public.
The Councillor for Culture, Núria Escamilla, highlighted the value of recovering an essential service for students, families and regular readers. “We are reopening with every safety guarantee,” she stressed.
During these months, the Mira-sol Marta Pessarrodona and Volpelleres Miquel Batllori libraries have acted as temporary centres for displaced users, maintaining cultural activity and access to library services.
The reopening of the Central Library is an important step towards restoring normality to Sant Cugat’s cultural life.
