Renfe drives the renewal of Rodalies in Catalunya with 500 million from the BEI

Renfe has taken a decisive step to transform the Rodalies service in Catalonia thanks to a €500,000,000 loan granted by the European Investment Bank (EIB). The railway company will allocate these funds to renew and expand its fleet, with the aim of improving the quality and sustainability of public transport in the region.
The agreement between Renfe and the EIB takes shape in a first phase with an initial loan of €250,000,000. This investment will allow the acquisition of 101 new trains, which will replace the trainsets that have been in operation since 1990. The new fleet will serve both Barcelona suburban trains and medium-distance and regional services, increasing the number of seats and strengthening the reliability of the rail system.
Renfe stresses that this project represents a key boost for public and sustainable transport in Catalonia. The company underlines that modernising the fleet will provide a better service to citizens, encouraging the use of trains instead of private vehicles and helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
For its part, the EIB frames this loan within its climate objectives and the InvestEU programme, which plans to mobilise more than €372 billion by 2027. The initiative reinforces the European commitment to sustainable mobility and the fight against climate change.
