Rodalies resumes services in Barcelona after the fatal accident in Gelida. Delays of up to 30 minutes persist on several lines. Technicians and train drivers are monitoring safety. Normal service will return gradually.

Rodalies de Catalunya services resumed this Friday 23 January, after a complete two-day shutdown following the serious rail accident in Gelida. The crash, which occurred on Tuesday, happened when an R4 train derailed after hitting a retaining wall that had fallen onto the track between Gelida and Martorell.

Overnight, teams of train drivers, Adif technicians and Renfe staff carried out thorough safety checks across the network. The resumption of passenger services was authorised only after these inspections.

Trains are currently running on all thirteen commuter lines, although delays of up to 30 minutes are being recorded on the R1 and R4, particularly during the morning rush hour. Rodalies warns that normal service will be restored progressively throughout the morning.

The previous night, the R2 Nord had already partially resumed service, with two trains operating between Sants and Barcelona Airport, and between the airport and Granollers, as part of the restoration plan.

Meanwhile, the special reinforcement operation involving 100 buses across Catalunya remains in place to meet demand while rail services return to their usual rhythm.

The accident in Gelida forced the entire Rodalies network to shut down for two days and left one person dead. Investigations to establish the causes remain open. Renfe and Adif insist that services resumed only after the complete safety of the infrastructure had been guaranteed.
