Ryanair closes its Santiago base and cancels flights in Vigo and Tenerife Norte
Ryanair has announced a drastic adjustment to its operations in Spain that includes closing its base in Santiago de Compostela and completely ceasing flights at Vigo and Tenerife Norte airports, according to El Diario.
The measure is part of broader cuts that will affect the 2025-2026 winter season, with 36 fewer direct routes in medium-sized cities and island destinations. The cuts will also affect Asturias, Santander, Zaragoza and other airports in the Canary Islands.
The Irish airline attributes the decision to “high and uncompetitive airport charges”, which, according to its management, make certain routes unviable. Some of the aircraft and routes will be relocated to Italy, Morocco, Croatia and Albania.
The company warns that the adjustment will mean a loss of connectivity, a fall in tourism and fewer jobs in the affected areas. At the same time, it urges the Spanish authorities to review their pricing policy if they want to guarantee the viability of domestic flights and balance in the air market compared with other European countries.
