Sabadell to transform Casa Grau into a major cultural centre for art and heritage
Sabadell is taking a key step in its urban transformation by converting Casa Grau into a major cultural centre. The city council has approved the change of use that will allow this modernist building to be restored and turned into a space dedicated to contemporary art and textile heritage.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with Fundació Banc Sabadell, which will undertake the complete restoration of the building and contribute a collection of 500 works of modern and contemporary art, including pieces by artists such as Picasso and Chillida.
The intervention covers a 2,390-square-metre plot and includes improvements in accessibility and heritage conservation. In addition, the former Museo del Gas will be integrated, which the City Council will restore to expand the exhibition spaces and bring together the city's main collections.
The future Sabadell Centre de Cultura will bring together holdings from the Museo de Historia y del Museo de Arte, along with the textile collection of Fundació Antoni de Montpalau, which includes thousands of haute couture pieces. Plaza del Gas will thus become a new cultural hub where art, history, and design converge.
The project has sparked political debate, although the municipal government defends it as an opportunity to reclaim a neglected space and strengthen local cultural identity. The initiative also aims to highlight Sabadell's industrial and textile past, connecting it with contemporary creativity.
The transformation of Casa Grau symbolises a new phase for the city centre, where heritage restoration is combined with new cultural initiatives capable of attracting both residents and visitors.
