San Isidro this year: more days, more music, and tradition in the streets of Madrid
Madrid is getting ready for a change of pace that will be felt throughout the city. San Isidro arrives this year with more days and more things to do: from 7 to 17 May, the festivities are extended and fill squares, parks, and neighbourhoods with music, dancing, and almost non-stop activity.
The opening will be marked by Sonsoles Ónega’s proclamation from Casa de la Villa. From then on, there will be ten days in which chotis, concerts and street festivities become part of the daily routine. Even beforehand, those who want to get into the mood can learn to dance it in free workshops at Daoiz y Velarde.
The programme is growing in volume and variety. There are concerts in different styles, children’s activities, workshops, DJ sessions and the classic Gigantes y Cabezudos. The idea is clear: for any plan to fit, whether you are looking for tradition or something more current.
The celebration does not remain in a single place. Spaces such as Plaza Mayor, Las Vistillas, Matadero and the San Isidro meadow share the spotlight. This makes the atmosphere spread throughout the city and requires people to move around, discover areas and change their usual routes.
For many neighbourhoods, these days bring a complete change. More people on the streets, more activity and longer hours. Opportunities also arise: from improvised plans to encounters that do not happen during the rest of the year.
San Isidro once again puts Madrid into a collective mode. For a few days, the city stops rushing and becomes a shared space where tradition and urban life mingle in every square.
